Now and again, someone combines two bits of gear in a way that seems like it could be the hot new thing. Not content with launching the mother of all guitar synth boxes, Boss has also been working on the Waza-Air. This puts a guitar amp and set of effects into a set of wireless headphones. Talk about convenience: it’s got everything you need to practise the guitar without annoying your neighbours.

Wireless convenience

The Waza-Air Wireless Personal Guitar Amplification System, to give it its full title, combines a set of wireless headphones with a guitar amp, plus effects. Back in the ’90s I had a Korg Pandora, which was a little silver box that had amp and effects built into it. I practised through headphones to get my chops up to speed – without annoying anyone else in the house. The only thing that got in the way was the bloody cables that would often get tangled up. Really annoying.

Un-tangled!

The new Boss Waza-Air looks like the perfect modern day solution for guitar players in that scenario. The system has a pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones and a wireless transmitter for your guitar. No risk of getting tangled up in your cables there, then.

All the amp tones and controls are derived from Boss’s Katana amplifiers. There are 50 effect types to choose from, all of which have been optimised specifically for the Waza-Air system. You can also adjust and customise your patches in the Boss Tone Studio app for iOS and Android.

3D headphone modes

On top of the normal guitar effects Boss has also added three modes: Surround places the amp in a virtual room, while Static gives you “natural spatial localisation” changing the sound depending on where you move your head. Stage puts you in a live stage environment, with the virtual amp sound coming from behind you. That could sound pretty awesome if it’s implemented right.

Now, this system isn’t as cheap as some. But you can use it to practise along to your favourite tracks via Bluetooth, so you can stream your tracks to the system. Those Boss Katana amp/effects sounds are already very popular with many players. Check out the official Boss demo video below or head over to the product page from he link below, to read the full specifications of the new Boss Waza-Air system.
