60 years of the SG: Gibson ships 1961 “Les Paul” SG with sideways Vibrola
Back in January, Gibson offered a sneak peek of two 60th Anniversary 1961 Les Paul SGs with Sideways Vibrola. Available in two classic finishes, these anniversary models look pretty special and feature lots of period-accurate appointments. And yes, they’re priced accordingly…
Gibson 60th Anniversary 1961 Les Paul SGs with Sideways Vibrola
Gibson has published more detailed specs on the Custom Shop 1961 Cherry Red VOS Standard and the 1961 Polaris White VOS Custom models, which are both now available to order. These cool-looking guitars both feature a Sideways Vibrola trem system. But why Les Paul in the name? In 1961, Gibson offered these as the new shape for that model, even labelling them “Les Paul” on the truss rod cover. Apparently Les wasn’t too happy about his name being used on these, so Gibson changed the name to SG.
Both guitars have a non-weight-relieved mahogany body, plus a ‘61-shape mahogany neck and that Sideways Vibrola. They also both share a 12” fingerboard radius, an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge and have 22 medium jumbo frets. But that’s where the similarities end.
1961 Cherry Red VOS Standard
The 1962 Cherry Red VOS Standard comes with an Indian rosewood fretboard with cream binding and aged Cellulose Nitrate Trapezoid inlays. You also get a set of Kluson Reissue Double Ring tuners and aged nickel hardware throughout. This Standard model comes with a pair of Custombucker pickups. So far, so good.
RRP: USD/Euro 4,999
1961 Polaris White VOS Custom
But by far the more eye-catching model of the two is the 1961 Polaris White VOS Custom. It comes with aged gold hardware and an ebony fretboard with white binding. This model has a set of Grover Kidney tuners and block mother-of-pearl inlays. This Custom model also has three Custombuckers selected via a three-way switch. A fantastic-looking, all-out rock monster that is far too expensive to play.
RRP: USD/Euro 6,699
