New Ritchie Blackmore-inspired Catalinbread Dreamcoat and Skewer pedals
Ritchie Blackmore's tone in stompbox formats
Catalinbread has announced two new effect pedals inspired by Ritchie Blackmore. The new Dreamcoat and Skewer will be available as a box set for one month, after which you can buy them separately.
Catalinbread Dreamcoat
First up, the Dreamcoat, which is a replica of the original Aiwa TP-1011 reel-to-reel microphone preamp as used by Ritchie Blackmore for his drive tone. This one has a saturation knob that lets you add more gain to your guitar’s signal, and a frequency boost parameter that amplifies the 2.4KHz to 5KHz region. This pedal also has a handy blend control, to let you mix in your unaffected signal.
Skewer
Meanwhile, the new Skewer pedal is based on the old Hornby-Skewes Treble Booster and acts as a treble booster. It does a similar job to the Catalinbread Naga Viper pedal, although it is not based on the same circuit. It has three control knobs labelled Skew, Boost and Extra. Skew adjusts frequency response and the gain, whilst the Boost knob sets the amount of gain added, and the Extra knob adds gain from the silicon transistor to give you even more drive and grit.
Pricing and Availability
For their first month of production, the Catalinbread Dreamcoat and Skewer will be sold exclusively as a two-pedal box set at a discounted price of $299.99, at least for US customers. The normal price is $359.98 for the pair. Prices will vary, though, depending on where you are. Our affiliate partner Thomann has them listed at €349, with free shipping. The pedals are expected to be available individually in August. Individual prices have yet to be announced though, but it’s safe to say the box set will be slightly cheaper.
If you are chasing Blackmore’s tone then you may well want to pick up both anyway. You can hear the new pedals in action in the demo videos below. Orders are open now.
