Korg modwave: Preorders open on this motion infused wavetable synth
Korg re-announces their modwave wavetable synthesizer, the reviews are in and preorders are open for shipping in the autumn.
Modwave
I’ve been fortunate enough to have one of these things for a couple of weeks and you can read my full review here. Otherwise, here’s a quick recap of what it’s all about.
Modwave is built in the form of the Wavestate and Opsix but this time it’s all about the wavetables. Each oscillator can load up one of 200 wavetables and scan through the 64 waveforms. You can Morph the waveforms and you can blend two wavetables together. There’s also a 2GB library of PCM samples to browse through for a bit of extra spice.
Everything can be modulated and everything wants to be modulated as you get busy with the 4 envelopes and 5 LFOs and that’s just the obvious stuff. It has digital models of a bunch of filters including the Polysix and MS-20 and a nice round-up of digital effects at the end of the chain.
As a regular wavetable synthesizer modwave has a lot going for it but that’s not the half of it.
Motion Sequencing 2.0
The Motion Sequencing engine is one of two things that really defines this synth. There are 7 lanes of step-sequencer-style modulation that you can run into any aspect of your patch. The first three lanes are hard-wired to Timing, Pitch and Shape. Timing can set the length of each step in beats or in open time. Pitch brings note offsets relative to the note you play so each key can bring a melody. Shape throws envelopes into other modulation tracks to transform and modulate their motion. Then you have 4 open lanes that you can route to anything you like.
Each lane is independent with its own direction, probability and length and you can keep them tight or send them off on their own journeys of discovery.
Kaoss Physics
The other key features is the Kaoss Physics XY pad which has two dimensions of modulation. You can use it just like any XY pad or you can turn on the physics and transform the movement with gravity, friction, tilt and boundaries. Just the flick of a finger can set filters flopping or waveforms morphing that can continue forever or slowly make their way to a stop. it’s enormously fun!
Editor
It comes with an excellent Editor/Librarian which removes the guesswork from the modulation and offers a graphical interface over all the parameters and brings the Motion Sequencer to life.
Preorder
The Korg modwave should be available after the summer and you can order now for £689.
