Developer Beatskillz released the second major update to its SampleX vintage sampler emulation plug-in. SampleX V3 adds new low pass and high pass filters, stereo width enhancements, and an upgraded audio engine. The plug-in now uses dynamic convolution, which is the same tech used by the likes of Acustica Audio to simulate studio hardware with impressive realism. Beatskillz went and sampled 6 real machines at various input/output levels to come up with this release. Thus, we have achieved peak sampling by… sampling the samplers!

SampleX may be a detailed plug-in, though using it is fairly easy and intuitive. In additon to the bitrate and sample rate controls. The Shift control lets you adjust the aliasing effect, normally a defect of imperfect pitch-shifting, without changing the sample’s pitch. There’s also the Drive control which lets you inject the input saturation and overdrive effect from the AKAI s900 sampler into your audio. The new Width control presents a stereo expander/collapser that goes from mono to regular stereo to mid/side expanded space.

The new high and low-pass filters are modeled after the Moog ladder filter, complete with self-oscillation when you crank the Resonance control. The control setup is completed by a Wet/Dry mix knob, Input and Output level controls, machine selectors, On/standby switch, and presets. The user interface is unapologetically (and appropriately) retro – make what you wish of it.

All in all, SampleX V3 is a great means of getting that old sampler crunch back without complicating your life and financial standing. I tend to get mine from the excellent D16 Decimort, but that’s a different beast to SampleX which is a straightforward emulation of old, well-loved machines.
