The new Red Panda Raster 2 is a digital delay with a pitch and frequency shifter integrated into the feedback loop. Launched during Summer NAMM 2021, it’s due out at the end of the summer, and sounds like it could be a great delay effect to get creative with.

The Red Panda Raster 2 digital delay with pitch and frequency shifter can achieve harmonizing delays, micro pitch shifting, phase-shifted repeats, arpeggios, alien textures, self-oscillation, and make continuously evolving soundscapes. The effect is an update on the 2015 Raster model and now includes longer delay times, modulation, presets, MIDI, and stereo operation. The stereo input/output are on TRS, to save on space, but really open up the possibilities of this new version 2 circuit.

Creative Delays

You get a 1600 ms digital delay with a pitch and frequency shifter integrated into the pedal’s feedback path. This feedback control has the ability to create infinite repeats at 3 o’clock. So getting it to self-oscillate should be no problem. It has three delay ranges that allow you to dial in resonant feedback sounds and change the effect’s delay time with rhythmic shifts.

The pedal’s tone control lets you sweep between darker analogue-style repeats through to crisp digital clarity. This allows you to get your crazy repeats to sit low in the mix. Or, if needed, bring them up to push them forward with more definition.

You can also set the left and right delay times up as a ratio, so a single knob changes both in sync. And the two delay channels can be set up in series, parallel or ping pong.

Pitch Shifting

Pitch shifting of the repeats can be set up or down, and in semitone steps. You can use this to create tempo-synced arpeggios or more ‘out there’ wild effects. You can also detune in micro pitch shifts and create chorused repeats. Again, you get control over the left and right channels, so that they can be shifted by the same amount, a ratio, or in opposite directions. Perfect for getting creative with.

Modulation

There’s also a modulation section with seven waveforms that can be assigned to delay time, pitch shift, or the effect level for a tremolo style effect. Two of the waveforms are random and should be ideal for creating glitchy sliced delays or random pitch shift, wow and flutter, as well as broken tape deck effects.

MIDI, Control and Presets

Both footswitches can be set to either latching or momentary, for instant pitch jumps or quick blasts of delay. You also have MIDI with clock synchronisation and full implementation with additional parameters over USB or TRS. Plus, you can expand the 4 onboard user presets via the front panel to a whopping 127 via MIDI!

Overall, this update adds some serious ways to manipulate your delay. So if you’re looking for a studio rack style delay, but in a pedal format, then the new Red Panda Raster 2 could well be for you. I would advise heading over to the company’s main site for more in-depth details, as there is a lot going on with this delay pedal.

The Red Panda Raster 2 should start shipping by late summer. The release has unfortunately been delayed due to the global semiconductor shortage. Hopefully this won’t affect the release schedule too badly, as it sounds like a pretty powerful delay effect.
