Behringer has announced the STUDIO XL desktop audio interface and monitor controller. It’s a souped-up version of the recently announced STUDIO L, with more inputs, outputs and routing options.

Less than a month after the STUDIO L, Behringer does what everyone expected them to do and presents the grown-up version. The new STUDIO XL desktop audio interface and monitor controller adds more inputs and outputs for the needs of larger studios. Just like the STUDIO L, the new XL version appears to be heavily inspired by Mackie’s successful Big Knob Studio series, in this case the Studio+.

As an integrated desktop solution, Behringer STUDIO XL combines a 192 kHz / 24 bit USB audio interface with a monitor selector and controller. As a 2×4 interface, the STUDIO XL offers two additional playback channels over the STUDIO L. The number of available inputs has also been expanded. In addition to the mic inputs with Midas preamps, the STUDIO XL offers two pairs of 1/4” line inputs. There’s also an additional stereo aux input, which can be routed to the cue bus for monitoring via a selector knob on the panel.

The number of available outputs has also been increased. The STUDIO XL allows you to connect three pairs of studio monitors. In addition to the 2-track line outputs, there’s an additional pair of outputs for a headphone amp or studio sound system, along with a corresponding on/off switch and level knob on the panel.

VCA volume control

Other than that, the STUDIO XL is pretty much identical to the STUDIO L. According to Behringer, the large volume knob uses a VCA, rather than passing the signal through the potentiometer, which provides precise control and better phase coherency.

All the other features you’d expect from a monitor controller are there, as well. The two headphone outputs on the front side have independent level controls and source selectors. There’s also an integrated talkback microphone, which can be routed to the cue or 2-track buses.
