Gibson and Joe Bonamassa have teamed up yet again to bring the world the Bonabyrd, which is currently limited to 100 guitars worldwide. They’re available in an antique Pelham Blue nitrocellulose finish and each guitar is hand-signed by Joe. He has also played each one as well, so it will be infused with his mojo…
I have never been a fan of turkey at Christmas and avoid it wherever possible. Which sums up what exactly how I feel about the Gibson Joe Bonamassa Bonabyrd guitar. Obviously I have not played one as there are only 100 units in the world, so it’s fairly unlikely I will get to play one, as all the Bonamassa obsessives will have bought them all up by now and have them stashed under their beds (Gibson are banking on it).
I have no idea what Joe was thinking when he came up with this design, as to me it is hideous and should be killed with fire.
He has taken a classic ‘50s Les Paul design and mutilated it with the headstock of a ‘60s Gibson Firebird. Then to add insult to injury he has chosen as tacky a shade of blue as possible for a Les Paul. The guitar features PAF Custom Bucker pickups and has Joe’s favourite neck profile, which he uses on all his guitars. They have also chosen a lightweight mahogany one piece back. Spec-wise it is consistent with his other signature models.
Joe seems to put his name against so many products nowadays that it has become a running joke on many guitar forums and in guitar magazines. The idea probably sounded great after a few too many bourbons, just in reality its looks like a blue turkey.
So the Gibson Bonabyrd wins the 2015 Turkey of the Year award for me. Not sure if Joe can top this one in 2016, but you never know.
