I don’t think I’ve ever played an instrument as uniquely terrible as the Casio Digital Guitar. Those plastic strings, the incomprehensible action, those awful tones and drum patterns all wrapped up in a perfectly 80’s Sci-Fi body. So at least you’d look good, right? Digitar from Puremagnetik hope to recapture the magic.

Anyway, Puremagnetik have found one in a skip somewhere and have taken it upon themselves to sample it. The Digital Guitar came with a stunning 20 DG sounds covering things like guitar(!), electric guitar, glockenspiel, piano and clav. Puremagnetik pulled out the drum kit and sampled 20 drum patterns into loop clips.
They’ve taken it a bit further though and introduced glitch elements by circuit-bending, creating feedback and overdriving. If you listen to the sound examples there’s no way that you could possibly play those notes on the Digital Guitar itself – so perhaps the sounds will get a new lease of life.
The Casio Digital Guitar was the worlds first MIDI guitar made available at home keyboard type prices. It was certainly no SynthAxe but it must have given a handful of people some pleasure at some point.
