Ephemere Glitch Percussion Synthesizer plug-in released by Inear Display
Inear Display have released a glitch ridden percussion synthesizer based upon FM synthesis. Ephemere appears to be French for mayfiles, or a concept in contemporary art, or “misery” plants whose flowers only last a single day. I’m not entirely sure what Inear Display are trying to tell us.
Ephemere
The sounds are generated using FM synthesis. There are 12 sound engines, each assigned to a note of an octave. The sounds are then run through a multi-mode filter and an amplitude and pitch envelope. The FM oscillator has feedback control and at the other end the output has a distortion/drive unit. That gives you a decent amount of sound variation but the interesting stuff happens on the rhythmic side. Many of the synthesis parameters can be affected by randomisation, and probability can be applied to the triggering.
There are 12 drum kits and over 160 sounds to play with. Each sound can be routed to a mixer view and then out to individual audio tracks. The interface is very clearly laid out and is scalable up to 200% which is a must in these days of high resolution screens.
The sounds demos are very pleasing indeed. You can hear the variation and randomness working nicely.
