With the new Mixcast 4, Tascam presents its vision for an all-in-one podcasting studio. Featuring a mixer for 4 microphones and other audio sources, pads to trigger music and sound effects, built-in multi-track recording and USB audio, the Mixcast 4 looks like an expectedly competent product that offers a complete solution for podcasting like the pros. It comes bundled with custom recording software, designed for editing and finishing podcast recordings on your computer.

Podcasting studios, such as the RødeCaster Pro, the PodTrack P4 and P8 devices from Zoom, and Behringer’s Flow 8 are a more convenient approach compared to assembling your studio piece by piece. While a large part of the trial and error is removed, you don’t get to pick and choose the way you can with a custom setup. Still, these devices are real workhorses and it’s surprising that Tascam – a household brand for porta-studios and field recording – took so long to break into this area. Still, better late than never!

The new Mixcast 4 offers 4 microphone inputs and 4 headphone outputs to handle a group of up to four presenters. An auto-mix function can automatically adjust mic levels and help achieve a balanced mix. There is also a Bluetooth interface and a 4-pin TRRS connection for connecting guests by phone. A built-in mix-minus function should help suppress any unwanted echoes.

For adding sound effects and music, the Mixcast 4 features 8 multi-colored illuminated pads. A factory sound bank is included to get you started. Of course, it is also possible to put your own sounds onto the pads. Additionally, effects such as distortion and reverb can be controlled from them. A 5-inch touch display provides an overview of the mic levels and other sound sources, as well as immediate access to all functions of the Mixcast 4.

Record on SD card or via USB

The integrated recorder records podcasts with up to 14 tracks on an SD card. Those who prefer to record, edit and finish their podcasts on the computer can also use the Mixcast 4 as a USB audio interface with 14 inputs and two outputs. To support thus, Tascam released a free Podcast Editor app designed specifically for the Mixcast 4. It is intended to enable intuitive recording and editing without extensive DAW knowledge. The Tascam Podcast Editor app is available for Windows, macOS, and iOS. An Android version is in the works.
