Steinberg WaveLab 11: multitrack editing, parameter automation and more
Steinberg has released WaveLab 11 Pro and Elements. The new version of the tried-and-true audio editor comes with a long list of new features, including extended support for multi-channel audio files and surround mastering, better multitrack/stem handling, plug-in parameter automation and more.
Steinberg WaveLab 11
About two years after the release of WaveLab 10, Steinberg’s audio editing software for mastering and audio production was due for an update. The new WaveLab 11 introduces a long list of new features, many of which have the potential to bring big workflow improvements.
Immersive audio and Ambisonics are hot topics right now. To meet the demands of modern post production and mastering, WaveLab Pro 11 offers extended support for multi-channel interleaved audio files up to 22.2 and Ambisonics surround sound formats.
The Pro edition also gets new track groups for working with multitrack projects and stems. Tracks can be routed to a group bus with effect plug-ins and gain and pan controls, before the signal reaches the montage output and master section. If you’re working with mix stems, you can now divide an audio track into eight sub lanes. This is also useful for editing and processing sound effects from layered clips.
Plug-in parameter automation
A new automation panel has also been added to WaveLab 11 Pro, which provides parameter automation with clip envelopes for the parameters of VST3 plug-ins. Very nice! Speaking of plug-ins, the Pro version comes with a bunch of new ones, including Frequency 2, Squasher, Imager, Quadrafuzz v2, MixConvert V6 and VST AmbiDecoder. It also features DeReverb, which was exclusively developed for WaveLab, and the new LIN Pro dithering plug-in from MAAT Audio.
Other improvements in WaveLab Pro 11 include the SuperVision analyzer from Cubase and Nuendo, an updated Track Inspector, multi-core processing support for audio montages and many more enhancements.
WaveLab Elements 11 also gets its share of new features. The smaller version of the software is popular among musicians, broadcasters and podcasters. It now offers the complete feature set from WaveLab Cast, as well as some plug-ins from the Pro edition, including the DeEsser, Expander and PingPong Delay. Both the Pro and Elements editions now allow you to upload content directly to popular podcasting platforms such as Spreaker, Podbean, Soundcloud, Buzzsprout and Castros.
