The new Warm Audio WA-8000 is an affordable Sony C-800G replica
Warm Audio continues its quest to bring you replicas of the most famous microphones and announces the WA-8000 tube condenser. Although they obviously don’t mention the name, the company seems to have drawn inspiration from the famous Sony C-800G, which has been popular since the 90s and now retails for over $10k. Warm Audio’s version is no low-budget mic, either, but its price is a far cry from that staggering number.
Warm Audio WA-8000
Ever since it came out in 1992, the C-800G has been a favorite of pop, hip hop and R&B producers. Unfortunately, its premium price tag puts it out of reach of most amateurs and even many professionals. With the new WA-8000, Warm Audio is giving you the opportunity to own a C-800G-style multi-pattern tube condenser at a much more affordable price.
The company says that the WA-8000 has been developed to the exact specifications of the original and that it delivers the same, natural-sounding, open mid range that the C-800G is cherished for. The microphone offers switchable cardioid and omni polar patterns. It’s built around a NOS 6AU6 tube and a Lundahl output transformer. According to Warm Audio, the characteristic enclosure design ensures optimal heat dissipation.
The WA-8000 offers a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Warm Audio states a self noise level of 15 dB(A). Using the cardioid polar pattern, the mic can handle 131 dB SPL. In omni mode, it goes up to 134 dB SPL.
The Golden Age GA-800G, which was introduced last year, can take slightly higher sound pressure levels, but also has a higher noise level. And it costs about three times as much. If you’re on the lookout for a more affordable alternative with impressive specs, the Warm Audio WA-8000 could be the ticket.
The microphone comes with a shock mount, external power supply, 7-pin XLR cable from Gotham Audio and a carrying case.
