The Epiphone B.B. King Lucille model is finally out!
Fit for a King!
Epiphone has finally launched the eagerly awaited B.B. King Lucille model. It comes with a Varitone switch, a pair of Alnico Classic Pro humbuckers, plus the ’60s Kalamazoo headstock. If you wanted to honour the King’s legacy by owning one of his favourite models, but thought the Gibson versions cost too much, now is your chance!
Epiphone B.B. King Lucille
Ever since Emily Wolfe shared a sneak peek of it 8 months ago, the Epiphone B.B. King Lucille model has been highly anticipated, and finally gets an official release today. The classic semi-hollow design has no f-holes, a Varitone switch, a TP-6 Stop Bar with fine tuners, as well as an Epiphone LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge.
Alnico Classic Pro
The guitar comes loaded with a pair of Alnico Classic Pro humbuckers, which are wired to that six-position Varitone switch. You also get the regular three-way pickup selector, and twin volume and tone controls that use CTS potentiometers.
Construction
The body is made of a five-ply layered maple with spruce binding, and a maple centre block. This is paired with a rounded C profile maple neck with a 12” radius ebony fingerboard, 22 medium jumbo frets, block inlays, and a 1.69” Graph Tech nut. You also have the updated ‘60s Kalamazoo headstock, with mother-of-pearl Epiphone and Lucille logos, a Brass Bell B.B. King engraved truss-rod cover, and Grover Rotomatic tuners with Keystone buttons.
Fit for a King!
Other embellishments include a five-ply bound tortoise pickguard, black mounting rings, and gold hardware throughout. Of course, it comes in an ebony black finish, which makes it look like one very classy instrument indeed, fit for a king. Because it has no f-holes, there is a small access control plate on the rear for the electronics.
Overall, at under a grand, the Epiphone B.B. King Lucille seems to offer great value for money. It is certainly much cheaper than any previous Gibson incarnations of King’s favourite fiddle. And though Epiphone has made versions of this model in the past, hopefully this one will be even better, as modern guitar construction has come a long way since then.
