Now that is a bit spooky. I’ve had the Dark Matter video running in the background and it’s starting to freak me out.
Dark Matter
Dark Matter is a 20GB sound library and Kontakt Instrument that’s designed to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. It has this ability to generate unsettling and downright creepy cinematic sounds. Even the interface looks a bit… well, cold.
Each instrument consists of 4 layers with minimal controls over pitch, volume and pan. So it’s leaning heavily on the included library rather than manipulation. There’s an overall ADSR and LFO on the amplitude, pan and high and low-pass filters. For the effects side there’s a screamer, lo-fi, phaser, tape saturation, delay and chorus. Past the 180 or so presets a cool randomise function gives it the ability to generate some very unique and surprising sounds.
I am loving the minimalist look and I am totally chilled to the bone listening to it. If you are into creating sonic textures for alien planets or dark atmospheric infused video games then this is definitely for you. I need to go an have a nice hot cup of coffee.
Dark Matter from Strings Audio is available for the full version of Kontakt for $99. This appears to be the first release from String Audio and I’m quite excited to see what else they might be bringing along to the cinematic party.
