From New Systems Instruments comes Intertia; an intriguing Eurorack module that’s disguised as an LFO but inspired by the Serge Dual Universal Slope Generator.

It refuses to be just an interesting LFO, it wants to be lots of other things too like a phase-locked loop, exponential slew limiter, slew gravity well, envelope generator, filter and percussion generator. And while we might not get fully to the bottom of what’s going on it’s going to be fun finding out.

So, this is about rising, falling, frequencies and skew of the Rate of change being messed about by momentum. So while you may have a straightforward rise and fall, when you introduce momentum the rise will then overshoot pushing the waveform into interesting places. You have these ways of generating a shape because of its inherent inertia – nice, I like it. As you push it in different ways it becomes different things. It flows from being an AR envelope into self-oscillation as an LFO to an attack envelope for percussion.

Switched into audio rate Inertia can be used as a melodic VCO over 5 octaves where the Skew control can push in some edges to the waveforms. It can also become a filter but one where you can control the skew of both the cutoff and the resonance. When pushing the resonance all sorts of harmonics can be discovered and played with.

The Dual Universal Slope Generator for Serge modular is regarded as one of the most versatile modules in the system. You can see the similarities in the use of Rise and Fall, the manipulation of slopes and the remarkable amount of flexibility. But there’s a lot going on in this module and we probably haven’t seen half of it yet. It has the potential of being a very thoughtful source of movement in your modular.

Inertia is available now for $329.
