Modal Effects DISRUPTION: A modern day modular guitar pedal
With magnetic interchangeable modules!
Currently working its way into reality via the magic of Kickstarter, the new Modal Effects DISRUPTION is being billed as a modern day modular guitar pedal. It features an all analogue circuit and six modules you can combine in a variety of ways.
Modal Effects DISRUPTION
The Modal Effects DISRUPTION pedal is spelled with all capitals all over the promotion material. It is slightly annoying, but I can live with it. What is interesting, though, about this particular pedal are the magnetic modules, with currently 6 available, that allow you to customise the pedal’s tones. The individual modules include Fuzz, Distortion, Overdrive, Boost, Low-Pass Tone and Mid-Scoop Tone. The main pedal itself is true bypass, and will run from an external 9V DC power supply. A slanted fascia has two footswitches labelled On/Off and Activate, with LED status lights and a Master Volume control.
It is a 100% analogue circuit throughout. It is just a case of choosing which modules you would like to combine to create your tones, playing them in the order you want and using the magnetic system to keep them in place.
Magnetic Modules
The pedal allows you to essentially plug in up to three modules at a time to create your drive tones. You then use the Solo Channel Selector which to select individual module slots to turn on, or bypass entirely. The concept is pretty easy to get your head around and, in theory, makes a lot of sense. I like that you can re-order things in a way that works for you, and having the actual modules held in place by magnets is also a neat idea.
It also has a Clipping Diode Switch; Si is a silicon diode, LED is a light-emitting diode, and finally Ge is a germanium diode.
Prices and Availability
There are a few packages listed, with a suggested MSRP $319 for the Starter Pack, which has the main unit and three modules. Or, for $479 you can get the Experimenter Pack, with all six module included. You can also get a nice discount on all these if you back the project on Kickstarter from the link below. If it all goes to plan, the first units should start shipping out by August 2022.
