Sovndspear Supertube plug-in: roll your own tube compressor!
Developer Sovndspear presents a new plug-in called Supertube. This is an unorthodox take on a dynamics processor (compressor). Rather than a particular hardware unit, Supertube simulates tube compression. It goes at it deep, letting you adjust several tube parameters on the fly. It’s not the most exhaustive virtual tube model I’ve ever seen, but you don’t really need that much parameter control to cook up some sweet tube sounds. The price is very fair, too – just EUR 25 during the introductory period, then it’s EUR 35.

Supertube offers six parameters to shape how the virtual tube affects the audio input. You can use the six rotary controls to adjust Plate Voltage, Charge Capacitor, T. Conductance, Tube Geometry, Out Impedance, and Grid Resistor. Each of these parameters changes how the tube sound – yes, even the shape of the glass tube, which is also emulated and adjustable.
In the middle of the very clearly designed user interface is a live tube and a meter that shows the gain reduction. Below, you can adjust the actual compression with four additional controls: Threshold, In and Out Gain, and Dry / Wet Mix. I’m pretty sure you can get some usable and not at all gimmicky compression going, though it’s probably for coloration purposes. I wonder if one can coax some troublemaking overdrive out of this thing? Let’s give the demo version a spin and see for ourselves.
