PRS has put a subtle yet welcome update on its SE Custom 24 Floyd model for 2022. The wallet-friendly PRS will now feature a shallow violin carve top, edging it ever-so-slightly closer to its Core counterpart. Though not a dramatic change, it will give players on a budget a similar playing experience to the US-made versions.

PRS has just announced an update to its SE Custom 24 Floyd model for 2022. The guitar will now feature a shallow violin top carve for the first time, bringing it closer in looks and feel to its American cousin. I’m one of those guitar players that really enjoys a Floyd Rose locking trem system. I’m aware a lot of musicians avoid the Floyd, but it really is a great tool to have on a well set-up guitar. So I am sure this news will please fans of the instrument, who were looking to get a similar experience to the US Core version, but without breaking the bank.

Shallow Violin
The basic specifications are: a mahogany body with a maple top, and a maple neck with a 24-fret ebony fretboard. All good stuff, and perfect for this style of locking-trem loaded instrument. The top has a flame maple veneer, with the new shallow violin carve. The model comes in a very stylish looking Charcoal Frost finish, with black plastics and chrome hardware throughout.

85/15 “S”
Pickups are a pair of PRS SE specific 85/15 “S” humbuckers, wired via a single volume and a push/pull tone control, with a 3-way blade switch. It’s a standard setup, yet perfect for the job it is designed for. To hear what this Floyd Rose 1000 loaded guitar can do, check out the official PRS demo video below. It sounds pretty good to me.
Sure, this is may be a very miniscule update, but it does get you ever so slightly closer to the full violin carve of the US-made Core models, and at a fraction of the price. And that, I think, is a good thing. I’m not sure when stock will start filtering through to PRS dealers though, so be sure to check before placing your order.
