Free Softube plug-in: Dirty Tape, for when tape’s too clean
Swedish software developer Softube is giving away its latest plug-in, Dirty Tape. Until January 31, you can have it all for free. Interest is understandably high as the Softube website crumbled shortly after launch. Dirty Tape is a simple and effective plug-in to conjure tape drive, hiss and dirt for audio and instrument tracks. You can start from subtle and go all the way to piles of dirt.
Softube Dirty Tape
There’s a little saying on the GUI right next to the plug-in name which I find quite appropriate: “Do not clean tape heads before use.” That’s a fitting description of the new and (currently) free Dirty Tape plug-in from Softube. It incarnates the developer’s expertise in all things tape (as exemplified by plug-ins like Tape, Tape Echoes, Harmonics, and Saturation Knob) in a downright diabolical manner.
Anyone familiar with these tools knows what kind of quality to expect. The graphical user interface is typically polished and contains two VU meters (for input and output), as well as controls for Drive, Dirt, Low Cut, and Output Volume. In addition, the signal can be output in stereo or two decoupled channels (dual mono).
Dirty Tape is apt at creating tape saturation as known from tape machines. The plug-in can also subtly color and modulate the sound, but truthfully, it’s intended for dirt. This makes it suitable for any genre where gritty sounds belong.
Availability for Softube Dirty Tape
Until January 31, 2022 you can download Dirty Tape free of charge from the Softube website. After that, the plug-in will be put for sale. The plugin works under macOS 10.13 or later and Windows 10 or later in 64-bit AU, AAX, VST2, and VST3 formats. A free iLok account (or paid USB dongle) and the free Softube Central software are required for authorization.
