The Zoom Q8n-4K video content camera is now available in stores!
Announced this past December, the Zoom Q8n-4K Ultra High-definition Handy Video Recorder is now available in stores. In the same way that Zoom has built a reputation for providing quality ergonomically portable audio solutions, the Q8 aims to continue this legacy into the realms of content creation and streaming video. Like most Zoom products, the design philosophy here favours versatility and compatibility, as the Q8 is built to create and stream video content on all the most widely used platforms. Let’s take a look at some of the features that set it apart.
The Q8’s modular design allows the user to set it up for static capturing or strip it back to a camcorder for mobile use. The 160-degree fixed wide-angle lens captures 4K, with 10 scene presets to speed up the workflow in both indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. Capture-wise, it’s possible to record audio and video separately, or as a single MOV file. Besides the rotating LCD touchscreen for easy navigation, the Q8 also has Mini HDMI for external playback and uses USB for streaming and data transfer. If you’re self-shooting content, there’s also a built-in speaker for hassle-free audio monitoring between takes.

What makes the Zoom Q8n-4K such an interesting prospect is without a doubt its pro audio sensibility. Apart from being geared specifically toward video, unlike many SLR and mirrorless options on the market, the Q8 is compatible with most of Zoom’s modular capsules such as the EXH-6, SGH-6, MSH-6, SSH-6, XYH-5 and XYH-6, and is also equipped with dual XLR audio inputs. Features like these are unusual in a $399 handy cam, and this level of innovation means more manufacturers will surely follow. The fixed lens is its only shortfall, so perhaps we will see an expansion on this design from the likes of Sony, Olympus, Blackmagic Design, or Panasonic in the near future.
