Acustica Audio finished their Monday with the release of Mint, a suite of 4 plug-ins emulating the exceedingly rare Studer-Revox GL2112 solid-state console. It was built on commission from a Paris recording facility in the late 1970s. Only two of its kind exist – one in CBE Studio (Paris) and one in Oxygen Recording Studios (Italy). This is the kind of stuff that I love to see most from the pro audio archeologists at Acustica Audio.  Here’s more about Mint and the gear it reincarnates…

Mint contains 4 emulations derived from the super-rare Studer-Revox GL2112 console of which only two were ever built (to order). They were functioning prototypes produced by a Swiss designer and engineer who ran “one of the best known and most important companies in Switzerland in the field”. That would be Studer, though Acustica understandably can’t tell you that without risking a lawsuit. Acustica took the chance to model a functioning GL2112 which was commissioned by TOTA studios in Paris and later retrofitted to Oxygen Recording Studios in Italy.

In owner Paride Lanciani’s words, the desk is a ‘rather simple but very effective mixer with 32 channels, 8 effects returns, and 8 additional line-in channels.’ Some of its specialties include a double 80Hz-16kHz EQ in cascade and a limiter on each channel strip. The desk sounds ‘rather aggressive’ but careful control lends some rare analog color to your tracks. To that, Mint has 4 plug-ins:

  • INT EQ: 4-band EQ with dual Mid controls, Bass Cut, and 8 solid-state line preamps modeled.
  • MINT COMP: Solid-State Compressor / Limiter with 3 switchable dynamic processor emulations and a preamp emulation.
  • MINT PRE: Analog preamp plug-in with 16 Line preamps, 16 mic preamps, and 2 stereo buses. An additional 2 preamp emulations are derived from an industry-standard tape machine (Ampex 24-track). The preamps exhibit a slightly different response which means you can mimic an analog desk experience in your DAW.
  • MINT CHANNEL STRIP: combines the 4-band EQ, Compressor/limiter with 3 switchable modes, and preamp emulations into a single plug-in.

You can read more about the features and functionalities on the Acustica website. There’s some interesting “50 year old” equipment stuff going that’s really worth getting the details for.

Acustica Audio Mint – Price and availability

Mint is on sale for EUR 89 (35% off) until March 14, 2022. The plug-ins are available in 64-bit VST2, VST3, AAX, and AU formats for Windows 10 and macOS 10.14+. The free Aquarius application handles installation and authorizing.
