Developer Shattered Glass Audio released a new plug-in called Kompresor. It’s a versatile dynamics processor which isn’t especially complicated and doesn’t cost a lot of money (just USD 30). Kompresor offers a choice of four compression algorithms and three sidechain modes alongside other tweakables. Thus, it can be adapted for individual tracks, mix buses, and mastering applications. Here’s more about this powerful tool & sleeper-hit…

Kompresor is unabashedly digital in the sense it sounds clean and can be pushed to extremes that would set analog gear on fire. We’re talking 0.01ms attack times and ratios of 30:1 (isn’t that called limiting?). Some more interesting possibilities to look at:

Kompresor has three sidechain configuration choices:

  • FF (Feedforward) – calculates gain reduction based on the input signal.
  • FB (Feedback) – calculates gain reduction based on the output signal.
  • Ext SC (External Sidechain) – calculates gain reduction based on an external audio source’s dynamics. The sidechain in Kompresor has a switchable 6dB/octave high-pass filter with cutoff frequency values ranging
    from 20Hz to 200Hz.

Next up, there are 4 compression envelope types:

  • SIMPLE – standard compression envelope where both attack and release times are constant and their values are set by the attack and release controls.
  • AUTO – the auto envelope has the attack time tied to the attack control and the release time a function of the control signal’s crest factor. The release control sets the minimum release time.
  • PROGRAM – modeled after the program envelope found in vintage compressors. The envelope has two attack and release times calculated from the attack and release control values.
  • AUTO A – attack and release times are function of the input signal’s crest factor. The attack control sets the minimum attack time and the release control sets the minimum release time.

Further along, Kompresor’s peak detection circuit functions in the traditional Peak and RMS modes. There’s also the DELTA control that lets you A/B the dry and wet signal before the makeup gain stage. Finally, the gain reduction circuit has two modes – Lin (linear) and Log (logarithmic). When Lin is selected the gain reduction is computed based on the Attack-Release envelope of the signal. When Log is selected, gain reduction is computed for each sample and smoothed out by the Attack-Release envelope.

By the looks of it, Kompresor is quite deep for such a deceptively simple-looking plug-in. It seems to be a powerful tool in experienced hands. Also, seeing an ambitious digital compressor make the rounds is always refreshing in the “too many analog emulations” era.

Price and availability for Kompresor

Shattered Glass Audio is selling Kompresor for an affordable USD 30. The plug-in is available in 64-bit VST3, AU, and AAX formats for Windows 10 and macOS 10.15+. There’s a user manual to check for an in-depth look at all the features, and a fully functional demo to try.
