Initial Audio Dynamic Eq: Parametric equalizer with multi-band compression
Initial Audio has released Dynamic Eq, a parametric equalizer plug-in with built-in multi-band compression features. If you’re looking for an inexpensive alternative to Fabfilter Pro-Q, Dynamic Eq looks like it should be on your list.

While the idea certainly isn’t new, it’s incredibly useful and gives you precise control over the frequency content and dynamics of your tracks. Dynamic Eq combines a parametric equalizer with a multi-band compressor for a maximum of dynamic control.
The EQ features up to 16 bands, which can be high or low cut filters, high or low shelves or peaking bands. You can edit the EQ curve graphically by dragging individual nodes with your mouse, and a superimposed frequency analyzer provides visual feedback.
Each band also offers threshold and ratio controls, so you can dial in the desired amount of compression for that band. There’s also an Expand button than inverses the dynamic processing and turns the band into an upwards expander. Initial Audio says that the dynamic section is based on their IA-LA1 compressor.
The uncluttered, resizable GUI looks straightforward and easy to use. You can also choose from a variety of color schemes to suit your personal taste.
According to Initial Audio, Dynamic Eq is light on the CPU and can be used on every track of your production. While it doesn’t reinvent the wheel, it does look like a nice new alternative to other dynamic EQ plug-ins.
Price and compatibility
Dynamic Eq is now available for an introductory price of USD 29. The regular price will be USD 69. According to Initial Audio, the price includes lifetime free updates.
The plug-in runs on macOS (including Apple Silicon) and Windows (64 bit) in VST, AU and AAX formats.
