Another Antique Silverburst? Gibson Adam Jones Les Paul Standard
The third aged Silverburst Adam Jones model released
The Adam Jones Les Paul Standard Antique Silverburst has been officially released by Gibson, at last. We all knew it was coming, so it wasn’t exactly a huge surprise. However, it is up until now the cheapest version of the Tool guitarist’s signature guitar line.
Gibson Adam Jones Les Paul Standard Antique Silverburst
Some players already received their Gibson Adam Jones Les Paul Standard models back in February. Now Gibson has officially announced the latest iteration of the Tool guitarist’s signature guitar range. Again, this one is finished in an Antique Silverburst finish, just like the previous Les Paul Custom runs. Just this time it is a Standard model. This means that it comes with a slightly different configuration than the previous two models.
Specifications
The basics are pretty similar, so you have a mahogany body with a maple cap. This is paired with the 70s Rounded neck profile mahogany neck, with a volute. Which is paired with an ebony fretboard. Just this time you have the mother of pearl trapezoid Les Paul Standard fretboard inlays, and only binding on the neck and the top of the body. You also get the Custom Adam Jones Artwork on the rear of the headstock. Plus, an Adam Jones 1979 engraved truss rod cover, to remind you as well.
Incorrect Images?
Unfortunately, at the time of writing this article, the ‘official’ Gibson product page, shows images of the rear from the Les Paul Custom version. As we can clearly see a maple neck and rear binding. Someone at Gibson has messed up, and put incorrect information on the listing, so be mindful of this.
Gibson Pickups
Pickups this time around are a reversed chrome-covered Gibson BurstBucker 1 neck pickup and a black open-coil DC High-Gain Humbucker in the bridge position. The previous two Custom Shop signature versions had Seymour Duncan models, so they are making small savings by making the pickups in-house. These pickups are wired traditionally with two volumes, plus a pair of tone controls, all wired via a three-way pickup selector switch. Gibson mentions that they are also hand-wired with Orange Drop capacitors. Because apparently, that is now a big deal.
Is it a bargain?
Overall, if you either are a fan of Tool or if you just really want an aged Silverburst finish, Les Paul, then you are in luck. It appears to come in a plain black Gibson hard case this time, so they are certainly cutting production costs on this new line here and there.
Is it a bargain? No, not really. However, it does look like a nice guitar, even with the premium price tag for the Adam Jones association.
Somehow for me, this release comes off as a little sloppy, with product information announced early, and then those incorrect product images on launch.
