Danish effect company Emma Electronic hasn’t released a new effect pedal in 10 years. As a result, the new ON-1 Okto-Nøjs is quite a big deal for some of its fans. A fully analogue effect, the ON-1 was first seen at NAMM 2016 earlier this year and combines an octaver with a drive circuit. The result is designed to give you both low-end growl and dirt – all in one pedal.
ON-1 Okto-Nøjs
This box has been designed to be able to handle both bass and guitar signals, whilst maintaining clarity on the low end. The ON-1 Okto-Nøjs is essentially an octaver (Octo) and a synthesizer-like octave fuzz (NØJS). When combined, the two effects sound almost as though they could shake the foundations of a building.
Analogue
The ON-1 Okto-Nøjs is totally analogue, so don’t expect there to be any nasty digital artefacts or clipping, just nice, smooth organic fuzzy synth tones with plenty of bottom end. Emma Electronic has designed the analogue circuit to easily handle the low-end thump of a bass guitar and so I expect it should be creamy and smooth, not fizzy and thin like some digital effects.
The control layout looks simple and effective, it is divided into two distinct sections and is well labelled. It should be easy to dial in and it looks like a lot of fun, plus I would imagine it could be pretty versatile as well.
The ON-1 Okto-Nøjs is due out mid-December and is priced at $249 plus shipping and taxes.
