Gibson Dave Mustaine Songwriter released with signed and unsigned variants
The Dave Mustaine Songwriter has just officially been released by Gibson, and it is being offered in both signed and unsigned versions. Is this latest signature guitar a step in the right direction? Or is it another attempt by Gibson to ride on a well established artist’s name?
Dave Mustaine acoustics
This new Gibson Dave Mustaine Songwriter acoustic guitar is being offered in two versions. They are essentially the same, but the more expensive version has been signed by Mustaine. I wouldn’t personally think of acoustic guitars when I thought about Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine. Though, he certainly does use them and so it kind of makes sense.
His recent Gibson Flying V EXP has just started hitting dealers, and has had a mixed reviews from YouTube reviews, with some saying it is pretty good and others complain about finish flaws and setup issues. Can an acoustic with a Dave Mustaine connection offer something new?
24 Frets!
With a slightly thinner walnut Songwriter body which has a cutaway for easier upper fret access, that makes sense for a player like Mustaine. The signature acoustic has a 24.75″ scale length mahogany neck, with a 24 fret ebony fretboard. This is the first 24 fret acoustic guitar from Gibson, and so that is something new. Hardware includes a set of Grover Rotomatic tuners, plus a TUSQ nut, saddle, bridge pins. It also comes factory fitted with a higher output LR Baggs VTC under-saddle pickup. With sound hole mounted volume and tone controls.
Aesthetically, the guitar is very black, finished in an ebony nitro cellulose and has mother of pearl teeth inlays on the dark ebony fretboard, along with Vic Rattlehead artwork on the pickguard and on a mother of pearl peg head inlay.
Signed or Unsigned?
With the 100 signed guitars you get a certificate of authenticity and a Dave Mustaine hand-signed sound hole label, plus a custom hard case. The unsigned version appears to come with a standard Gibson hard case, but it will set you back less money. So how much is Dave’s signature and a C.O.A worth? The answer to that is $500, as that is the uncharge for the signed edition.
