The Gibson Lzzy Hale Explorerbird signature model is here at last. This hybrid design comes in an eye-popping Cardinal Red nitrocellulose finish. Gibson Brand Ambassador, Lzzy Hale has officially unveiled her new guitar in a kitchen-themed cooking video. I mentioned the other week that this was coming and today it was officially released.

The new Gibson Lzzy Hale Explorerbird has been officially announced. The Cardinal Red finish will surely make this model stand out from the crowd, along with the hybrid Explorer meets Firebird design. Lzzy’s previous Epiphone signature model was a huge hit, so this new Gibson USA model could well follow suit.

Specifications
It is a classic Explorer body shape and a Non-Reverse Firebird headstock, with a body and neck made of mahogany and an Indian rosewood fretboard. The SlimTaper mahogany neck has a fretboard fitted with 22 Gold Medium Jumbo frets and Gold Acrylic dot inlays that match the guitar’s gold hardware. The hardware includes a Tune-O-Matic bridge and a stop tailpiece, plus a set of Grover Mini Romotmatic tuners.

70s Tribute
Pickups are a pair of Gibson 70s Tribute models with gold screws/rods to match the overall theme of gold throughout this signature guitar. They are wired up with two volume knobs and a master tone knob, all hand-wired with Orange Drop capacitors and a three-way pickup selector switch.
Overall, it looks exactly like the guitar that Lzzy has been seen playing live recently and she often has it tuned to drop C, so this guitar should rock hard with the best of them.

It’s a red Explorer with an ugly headstock, a bit of bling and a price tag that’s 50% more than a regular Explorer.

Were you expecting a completely new design? It’s Gibson and they have trapped themselves in the past with their guitar designs. It is all about ‘Ambassador’ and ‘Signature’ model re-hashes of ’60 and 70-year-old designs. Dad (and Mom) Rock rules at Gibson!
No of course not, but a 50% premium for what you get with this is ridiculous.
I totally agree with you about the position Gibson has trapped itself in. I love Explorers and Flying Vs, but I’m a bit too long in the tooth to believe that buying an over-priced signature model is of any benefit whatsoever to anyone apart from the artist and Gibson.
As I’ve often said, don’t buy a signature model to dream of being the next (insert artist name). Buy a standard model and dream of being the first you. Even two or three more finish options on standard models *at the standard price* would be progress, rather than the endless procession of artist models (alongside the 23,758 minute variations on the Les Paul).
