Midweek Modular: FX, Asteroids and is this a new Make Noise module?
How would you like 200 effects in a single module for your Eurorack, or maybe you could build your own VCF, crash an Asteroid Kick Drum or perhaps run a DAW on a Raspberry Pi built into your modular? Or maybe we’re about to discover what Make Noise has up its sleeve.
This week we saw the evolution of the Happy Nerding FX AID module into the FX AID Pro. And the Nerding team are not messing around with this one. The DSP is packed full of 200 different effects and combinations so you’re never likely to be without what you need. Read more about it here.
The next module in the Erica Synths EDU DIY series has been released. This time it’s the filter which is probably what everyone has been waiting for. So get out your breadboard and let’s learn about designing a diode ladder filter. Read more about it here.
We also had the release of Cre8audio‘s West Pest, the counterpart to the East Beast. While both of these synthesizers are desktop-based you can also pop them out of their cases and drop the entire synth into your Eurorack. Read more about the West Pest here.
Midweek Modular Bits and pieces
Here are a few more bits and pieces of modular coolness that I’m pleased to shine a light on for this week’s Midweek Modular.
Custom Made Raspberry Pi for Eurorack
This is the idea of running an entire Linux based computer in your rack. Why would you do that? It’s a fair question but there is a large range of software available that would essentially bring the power of a DAW to your modular system. Imagine taking a case of modular with you and being able to have software synths and audio tracks built into it. Beats taking a laptop… just about.
This module is custom made by John Andrew of The Gear Spot in Roseville, MI, USA and features 4GB of RAM, 256GB SSD drive and a 5″ screen. You can plug a full-sized screen into the HDMI port if you wish. It can’t be powered by the Eurorack PSU and so needs to be plugged into power via the USB-C port. Otherwise, the device is self-contained, it has no CV in/out or anything other than USB ports on the front. So you would need an audio interface or an Expert Sleepers audio interface module or perhaps the new Befaco AC/DC to provide the connection to your modular gear.
John hopes to have a website and YouTube video about the project up very soon. Otherwise, you’ll find him on his Reverb store.
Blue Lantern Vintage Asteroid Kick Drum
This alarming looking module produces an 808 boom kick drum. Based on the first Asteroid Kick Drum Blue Lantern made in 2008 but updated to make it slicker and more skiff compatible.
It’s very simple. You have a trigger input and an audio output. The five knobs offer control over coarse and fine Tuning, Decay, Tone and Buzz. There’s also a manual trigger button. It come with a couple of different panels designs to choose from and those magnificent knobs. It’s only a very limited run so you’ll want to slam your €76 down as soon as you can.

Spad Electronics Rythm Lab
DIY project builders Spad Electronics has released its first complete Eurorack module. It’s a conversion of the Bastl Instruments Kastle Drum which is a mad little patchable groove machine noise box. The Rythm Lab hopes to emulate the madness while transforming the patching into proper minijack connections for Euroack integration.
Spad has made some modifications like adding a manual trigger button but otherwise, this is pure Kastle mayhem. Contact Spad Electronics directly if you’re interested.
Make Noise Envelope?
And lastly, we haven’t heard much from Make Noise in a while but this evening they are premiering a YouTube video called “Envelop the Waves”. While it could be something interesting and instructional it could also be the announcement of a new and undoubtedly fascinating Euroack module. It’s on in an hour so I’ll guess we’ll know soon.
