Google introduces Teenage Engineering’s Pocket Operator for Pixel
The latest update for Pixel 5 or newer devices allows you to download Pocket Operator for Pixel. Using the Teenage Engineering approach to interface design, the free app lets you remix and reimagine recorded video in a musical way.
How does Pocket Operator for Pixel work?
It all starts with capturing or importing a video file. Once you’ve loaded a clip, an AI-based algorithm instantly divides it into slices and categorizes them using icons to represent each one. The same algorithm also detects pitch and lays each sample out on a grid according to the selected song key.
Your clip is now ready for step sequencing. You can input your sequence on the pattern editor or record the loop in real-time. Your choice of patterns can then be linked together to form each section of your song.
Once this is complete you can layer effects that alter both audio and video. This process is non-destructive too, as you can later edit and replace any effects you’ve added.
If you’re still getting the hang of things, the useful guide tool points out the various parts of the interface as you go. Furthermore, there is also a walkthrough that explains the process from recording/import to export.
Overall, Pocket Operator for Pixel is a really powerful and fun-to-use app with loads of creative potential. You can use it to create social content, music videos, or to add the final editing touches to any video content you wish.
Whether this app will become available on other devices remains to be seen. For now though, it’s a powerful selling point for Google Pixel devices that could make you think twice before mindlessly upgrading to the next iPhone.
