Three new modules from Boredbrain: Monitr master output, UniFX guitar pedal effects loop and Xchangr stereo signal interchange. Let’s see how they’re wired.

Monitr

Let’s begin with the impressive-looking Monitr. It’s going to have a go at being the ultimate master output for your modular. The 5-segment stereo monitoring LEDs are rather nice that surround the master volume knob. You’ve actually got two stereo inputs which can be mixed together to form your master output either manually or via control voltage giving it some nice VCA functionality.

The headphones are on a nice big jack, which I appreciate, and you switch between either channel or the master output for monitoring. The final outputs are also on full-sized jacks and there’s a very welcome master mute switch at the bottom to round out this decently comprehensive output module.

UniFX

Boredbrain is putting this one forward as a guitar pedal effects look, although it can handle Eurorack signals as effects as well. At the bottom, you’ve got full-sized jacks to route out and through guitar pedals or other external effects which then loops back into the input. At the top is the Eurorack version setting up a modular effects loop.

The key feature is a nice big wet/dry FX MIX knob that ties the whole loop together in a very usable way. There is, of course, CV control over the mix which means it can also act as a VCA. The one thing missing in my view is a bypass switch; that’s something sorely missing in Eurorack effects and would be very useful here.

Xchangr

This module is designed to interface with desktop pedal stereo effects that are increasingly common in Eurorack. Xchangr provides two stereo sends and one stereo return. No, I’m not sure what you do with the second return either. They all have buffered level scaling to boost and attenuate in all the right places to give the correct signal level to the effects and back again. You could also use it for bringing line-level sources into your Eurorack.

The website says the extra Send is for parallel processing or an additional line output to a mixer which is all very plausible but seems a bit odd to me.

Cool connections

As we’ve seen with previous Boredbrain modules these are well designed (on the whole) and will undoubtedly be well made, robust and of high quality. They certainly look like they will do the business.
