Wampler Moxie a new TS10-style drive pedal
Another Tubescreamer overdrive?
The new Wampler Moxie Overdrive pedal is Brian Wampler’s take on the TS10, a pedal from the long line of Tubescreamers. Though this version of the circuit is not s straight-up clone and offers a twist to the formula.
Wampler Moxie Overdrive
Wampler actually states that the new Moxie Overdrive is its “twisted” take on the TS10, so expect something a little different with this Tubescreamer. Based on the 4558 chip and with controls for Volume, Tone and Gain. It could have just been a straight-up clone of the TS10, yet Wampler has added a couple of extra voicing options.
Switches
This little green pedal also has two switches labelled Voice and Fat. Voice adjusts the EQ, adding clarity and transparency with an alternative voice, offering more than just the traditional mid-boosted Tubescreamer tone. Then Fat switches in a custom-voiced MOSFET clipping stage, this adds more gain and gives the circuit a bolder tone.
Overall, you get the best parts of the classic Tubescreamer tone, with that added flexibility of the new voicing and that extra MOSFET stage. This could make this compact pedal appealing to fans of TS-style overdrive pedals. The Tubescreamer-style overdrive market is already pretty crowded, so whether or not it will stand out enough from the crowd is yet to be seen.
Pedalboard Friendly
The pedal will also operate happily at the standard 9 volts or 18 volts if you prefer more internal headroom. Being so compact it will also fit easily onto most pedalboard setups.
I would expect that this latest overdrive pedal will appeal also to fans of Brian Wampler’s work, as he certainly has a good solid reputation for building high-quality overdrive pedals. These include the various iterations of the Tumnus overdrive and his popular Pantheon overdrive circuits
