Instruō has two new modules in the shape of cruïnn, an analogue stereo oscillator, and cnōc, a West-coast style analogue two-stage function generator. Let’s check them out.

cruïnn

Instruō says that cruïnn has a lot of complexity under the hood that’s been tamed down to a few key parameters to make it fun to patch and easy to play with. I don’t believe a word of it. Instruō modules are exquisite, often deep and multi-layered, and require thought and a wide grasp of signal behaviour. The very fact that it comes with a companion module to output parallel sawtooth waveforms and input more CV modulation suggests that I’m right. But we should not be afraid of complexity, and these modules are so beautiful that you’d be a fool to shy away from them.

Inside the cruïnn we have a single sawtooth oscillator core with five additional phase-displaced variants. Each has its own internal triangle waveform LFO and through-zero phase modulation.

What does it mean? Super saws! This is all about lush supersaw tones of competing and harmonious waveforms phasing and pulsing against one another.

Anyway, you get a stereo output and a sum output via a built-in stereo VCA. It can be an LFO, it can handle linear and exponential FM, and it’s very beautiful to look at.

Jason from Instruō has produced a detailed video on the module running to well over an hour and a half. Those sawtooths sound fantastic.

cnōc

Now, this is a bit more along the lines of simple utility. cnōc is a nicely designed function generator with two stages. It can generate AR, ASR and looping envelopes but can also be an LFO, delayed gate signal, slew limiter or portamento generator, among many other things. With unipolar and bipolar outputs it’s going to be useful in every direction.

cnōc is beautiful to look at and took Jason a mere hour and twenty minutes to present. The detail in his videos is fantastic and you find yourself learning all sorts of things during the course of finding out about the module.
