The Catalinbread Soft Focus Reverb seeks to mimic the Yamaha FX500 effects unit, specifically the Soft Focus patch. A reverb that was used to great length in the Shoegaze genre of guitar music.

Catalinbread’s new Soft Focus Reverb pedal gives you an updated recreation of the Soft Focus patch number 40 from the Yamaha FX500. minus the digital delay part of the effect. What they have done though is fix the old noisy preamp, added a blend control and removed all the tone suck of the original Yamaha multi-effect unit. Players can easily add their own delay to get that full Showgaze tone.
The Soft Focus effect is essentially a heavily modified plate reverb with an adjustable time that is then split into three paths.

The Controls
The Soft Focus Reverb has controls for Symph (symphony) which mixes in a slight octave effect on the wet reverb signal, Mod which is used to adjust the rate of the multi-voiced chorus. It also changes some of the frequencies in the reverb oscillation. Then Verb adjusts the decay of the reverb, then Mix is used for blending in your dry signal to taste and finally Vol is used to adjust the dry signal pre-effect.
This final control can also be used when bypassed in buffer/trails mode as a clean boost. With both True/Buffered Bypass modes available, you can set the pedal up to taste. Catalinbread state that players can whack all the controls up to the maximum for the ultimate Shoegaze, but that it is also worth experimenting, as all the controls are musically very interactive.

Shoegaze in a pedal?
It sounds pretty close to the Yamaha FX500, though may also want to check out the Keeley Loomer * as it has a lot more to offer in terms of Shoegaze-style tones. Plus, it has fuzz as well.
