Introducing the SSL Connex USB surface microphone
With another move toward content creators, the SSL Connex is a multipurpose solution for recording vocals, speech, and live streams. It’s a four-capsule surface mic with integrated DSP that gives you specialized modes for the application you need.
If you’re familiar with SSL’s reputation with recording consoles, you’ll know there’s a reason behind every aspect of their designs. This means the pyramid-shaped Connex mic isn’t just trying to look futuristic, it really has some impressive features when you look closer.
The design of the SSL Connex
Behind each of the four sides is a mic capsule, each with its own designated preset for a specific task. While Solo mode is geared toward speech recording for streams or vlogs, Group mode is suitable for meetings, interviews, and conferences.
In addition, there’s a Music mode for capturing live recordings at high SPL and a Vocal mode for singing. With each mode, accessed via the touch controls on top of the pyramid, there is a DSP setting that adjusts EQ, dynamics, and noise reduction.
As an interface, the Connex is a USB bus-powered device, compatible with laptops and tablets, and allows you to record at up to 96 kHz sample rate.
With the touch interface, you can access more features like headphones volume and communications tools like push-to-talk and even a cough button. The light behind the SSL logo changes colour according to the current mode active, and there is also a mic loopback feature for ambient monitoring.
The Connex can be placed on any surface or mounted on tripods or mic stands with the thread adapter. The form factor is compact, at 9.3 cm long and 4 cm high – weighing only 300g, which makes it perfectly portable too.
