Guitar Gear Gems: Danelectro, D’Angelico and Fender Japan Custom Shop
Some major new guitar releases and an exclusive Fender Custom Shop release for Japan
Guitar Gear Gems this week takes a look at some of the latest guitar releases. These include the new Danelectro blacked-out models and the latest D’Angelico Guitars releases. Plus a new Fender Japan Custom Shop exclusive model.
Danelectro ‘59M NOS+ Blackout
These new Danelectro ‘59M NOS+ Blackout models each have a sparkly finish and black hardware, hence the name. There is a Black Metal Flake, Purple Metal Flake and a Green Envy finish on offer With the latter being minus the sparkle.
Double Cut
They each have a short-horn double-cut semi-hollow body, paired with a bolt-on 25″ scale length maple neck with 21 frets. They all have the Danelectro Lipstick pickups and stacked controls, with volume, tone and a three-way switch control layout.
Each guitar has an adjustable wraparound bridge, which should help with intonation.
Sparkly
Currently, these sparkly new finishes are not listed on the main site at the time of writing this article. Though, they appear to have the same specifications as the standard 59M NOS+ models, just with these new finishes applied.
MSRP – USD 570
D’Angelico Guitars Excel Tour Collection
D’Angelico Guitars has just announced their Excel Tour Collection semi-hollow models. The models included in this release are the single-cut Excel SS Tour, Excel DC Tour and Excel Mini DC Tour.
Each guitar comes with Supro Bolt Bucker pickups as standard. These Supro Bolt Buckers use scatter-wound 42-gauge enamel wire, with a mixture of Alnico II (neck) and Alnico V (bridge) magnets. This should offer a vintage, almost PAF-like tone, in theory.
Semi-Hollow
These semi-hollow models all have laminate maple bodies and are each available in Slate Blue, Solid Wine or Solid Black finishes. They all come with a three-piece neck and have 12″ radius ebony fretboards, with 22 Medium Jumbo Blacksmith wire frets.
MSRP – USD 1499.99 each

Fender Japan Michiya-Haruhata Stratocaster
Finally, there is the new Fender Japan Michiya-Haruhata Custom Shop Stratocaster and this ‘Heavy Relic’ Strat is built by the Custom Shops Masterbuilder Jason Smith.
Limited Edition
This limited edition Heavy Relic has an ash body with a two-colour sunburst finish, paired with a maple neck that has a reverse headstock. Pickups are a pair of Fender Vintage Noiseless single-coils in the neck and middle positions and a DiMarzio DP155 humbucker in the bridge position.
Collectors
Certainly a guitar for fans of the relic look and anyone that likes hot-rodded vintage style Strats. It will definitely be a hard one to track down, as it is as ever exclusive to the Japanese market. This is one for fans of Michiya-Haruhata and possibly guitar collectors I suspect.
MSRP – YEN 1,500,400
