Teenage Engineering has added a vocoder to the OP-1 field and as expected, it’s easy to use and sounds great.

This announcement follows another recent update in November last year, when velocity sensitivity was added to the OP-1 field’s internal keyboard.

With these constant tasty feature updates, it would seem as if instruments like the OP-1 field, OPZ, and even the TX-6 are gifts that keep on giving, and users certainly aren’t complaining.

How to use the OP-1 field vocoder

It’s as simple as selecting a preset, assigning your input, and bam – instant warm analogue-sounding vocoder goodness. You can use the built-in mic, a headset, the radio, or USB as your input sources to modulate the notes played on the keyboard.

The signal passes through a total of 20 filters with variable bandwidth and formant shift, which is also controllable. The vocoder’s carrier signal is a specifically designed integrated 7-oscillator polyphonic synth that you can control live.

The simple layout of the OP–1 field vocoder‘s controls is as follows:

  • the blue knob tweaks the complete synth engine
  • the ochre knob is formant shift
  • the gray knob controls the number of bands
  • the orange knob is mix amount.
