NAMM 2017: Steinberg bring two new HALions and an Absolute 3
Steinberg have announced new versions of their virtual instruments HALion and HALion Sonic along with an update to the Absolute collection.
HALion 6
Steinberg’s software sampler continues to evolve. This new version focuses on sound creation. It has a bunch of new sound design tools and gives you what you need to craft your own instruments. It has a new wavetable synthesis engine to bring elements of synthesis into your instrument building. You can now record directly into HALion (who would believe such things would be possible in a sampler!) from any internal or external source. There’s an interface editor and library functions and it’s all fully scriptable. Steinberg have gone all out in opening up HALion to make it into a sampler rather than a sample player – which is what it always should have been.
I have to say the interface and the new wavetable thing look excellent.

HALion Sonic 3
HALion Sonic is like HALion but without all the juicy bits. It includes the 6 new instrument libraries that come with HALion 6 and so has the sounds but not the creation tools. The new library includes two Grand Pianos, some Brass, Strings, a bunch of Wavetable stuff and the Skylab granular library.
Absolute 3
Absolute 3 is the latest collection of the Absolute bundle which collects absolutely everything together in one package. This includes HALion 6, HALion Sonic 3, Groove Agent 4, The Grand 3, Symphonic Orchestra, Pad Shop Pro, Retrologue 2, Hypnotic Dance, Triebwork, Dark Planet and Zero Gravity.
Steinberg’s pricing and availability
They are all scheduled for release in February. HALion 6 should be $349, HALion Sonic $249 and Absolute 3 $499. More information on the Steinberg website.
