True to form, Behringer have teased a new prototype via their Facebook page this afternoon, the JT-2, a single voice unit in a Eurorack friendly form factor.

The Behringer JT-2

The budget synth manufacturer have announced that whilst they work on their full key version of the Jupiter 8, they have come up with a new prototype to sate the appetites of those that wait. The prototype, currently named, JT-2, is, and I quote, “an authentic Jupiter voice based on the same VCOs and VCFs, plus an autotune and arpeggiator function“.

Single Voice Paraphony

Looking at the three images supplied, the unit certainly bears all the visual hallmarks of the classic Roland polysynth. The key difference here is that distinct lack of the other 7 voices. The branding states that it is an analog paraphonic synthesizer. This statement and the number 2 in the name suggests that it might actually be able to play two notes, albeit with the second note not re-triggering the VCF and VCA.

Behringer claim that they believe they can make this for an RRP of $299 USD. This would make it slightly cheaper than Roland’s own JP-08 which is polyphonic, if only 4 voice. Other than being Eurorack compatible, one has to wonder why anyone would entertain the Behringer over a genuine Roland. The obvious answer is that the JP-08 is discontinued!

Convenient and Well Connected

Would you entertain the concept of a single voice Jupiter or does the very name Jupiter scream polyphony? The front panel of the JT-2 certainly looks the business. Connectivity is limited to a single MIDI In and Out, USB and a mono audio out. The regular array of 3.5mm CV/Gate, Sync and audio outputs adorn the front panel. The classic Roland red, orange and yellow buttons function as controls for the arpeggiator. No presets here, obviously!

To JT or not JT?

Behringer have invited comments to be left on their Facebook post. Is this something that appeals to you? Would you pay $299 for a single Jupiter voice? Would you prefer to wait for the full-blown poly that they teased at the end of last year? Let us know in the comments below.

I need this. Purely as a controller for my MKS-80! Do the right thing behringer, and make the knobs transmit the proper sysex!

I hadn’t thought of it that way… Throw in some more controls and make a MIDI-mappable controller for plugins or a future desktop JP-8 🙂

Well, they have like 30 announcements that are under development by now. Might be a good idea that they start to ship something before any more noise about upcoming products. Most of my Behringer synths works fine but having trouble with my MS-1, a firmware fix for this real product will likely never see the light of day but they keep posting these announcements.

at this point do they just throw a random thing made with photoshop and develop the most popular? so many “prototype” that have never seen the light of day. I would be insterested in a full jupiter remake but one voice is not really appealing.

the behringer saturn soul? a repulsively ugly volca formfactor Jupiter 1 voice, ok. jt-2 is wasted components and materials for one voice.
behringer do something right? so funny… still lmao! hahahaha
