NAMM 2017: Gretsch ‘Salute’ Malcolm Young, recreating his ’63 Jet Firebird
The backbone of AC/DC gets honoured in 2017 with a faithful recreation of 'that' guitar.
Gretsch is honouring legendary guitarist Malcolm Young with a signature Custom Shop recreation of his iconic guitar. Malcolm is known to rock fans as the backbone of AC/DC, and has immortalised this one specific guitar model, a ’63 Jet Firebird. This recreation is the Malcolm Young “Salute” Jet, or G6131MY-CS, if you prefer. Either way, there will be many AC/DC fans considering pulling the trigger on this in 2017.
Back In Black
What can you say about Malcolm Young that hasn’t already been said? He must, surely, be considered a living legend. He played this iconic single-pickup, road worn, battered best friend every night on tour. Unfortunately, the poor bloke has not been well and so I’m happy he is getting the recognition he rightly deserves from the guitar world. You’ve got love AC/DC, they have made some killer songs with glorious riffs that the whole world knows and Malcolm was the backbone for that band for so many years.
Shake A Leg
Grestch tell us that this Custom Shop recreation attempts to emulate the instrument that Mr Young played as closely as possible. It’s a double cutaway mahogany bodied guitar with only one TV Jones pickup. Malcolm’s original made the world rock, and this stripped back guitar will put a smile on many player’s faces. The ‘U’-profile mahogany neck has the classic ebony fretboard with those ’60s style fret markers and 23 frets.
Have A Drink On Me
Gretsch have not only aged it but also tried to recreate all the knocks, scrapes and spills the guitar has endured over the decades. So it won’t be cheap – and so what? I’m just happy the man got honoured, as he is often in the shadow of his ‘school uniform wearing’ brother.
But he is just as important in the world of rock guitar as his devilish sibling! We salute him…
