This week Noise Engineering hatched a new Versio module, Centrevillage has an improvisational sequencer and Feedback does a good old-fashioned LFO.

Here are a handful of stand-out modules that caught my eye this week.

Noise Engineering Yester Versio

The latest in the line of Versio modules is what Noise Engineering likes to call a “simple delay”. Yester Versio is a three-tap delay that tries its best not to get too complicated. But this is Noise Engineering so features are always going to creep.

You have delay time, feedback and panning to play with along with choices of even, triplet or dotted replies. It can be clocked or tapped for easy synchronisation. But then, what’s this, a filter, oh, a wavefolder and a chorus? So much for simplicity.

The filter is a DJ-style highpass/lowpass filter with knob or CV control. The Chorus goes from clean pitch shifting to LFO modulation, and the Fold can get things chaotic and gritty.

The Versio platform is now well established, and you can choose from a range of different firmware to change the nature of your Versio module. Yester was never going to be just a simple delay, but it’s probably the least mystical of the Versio modules and sounds freakin’ awesome!

Centrevillage Cosmos Quencer

This looks like it’s going to be difficult to define. Cosmos Quencer is a performance-based phrase-generation sequencer. You pick a scale and then go to town pushing sequences, patterns, rhythms and pitches as improvisations.

Rhythms and pitches are generated separately. The rhythm side is based around Euclidean algorithms whereas the pitches use a “Quantised Based Sequence” through randomisation, LFOs and external modulation. Along with the CV and Gate output you also get an oscillator waveform, which is very interesting.

Watching the video (below) I think I can gather that each petal of the flower has a different effect on the pattern/phrase generation. You are leaning on things like Range, Length, Bias, Scale and Pattern. It also sounds like there’s a whole synth voice in there which includes a polyphonic chord mode. Fascinating.

Feedback LFO-20

LFO-20 is a good-looking analogue LFO from Feedback modules. You have two outputs and a knob that pushes the waveforms into different shapes. The Triangle output goes to saw and ramp whereas the Square output does some pulse width modulations. There’s also an inverted triangle output.

A Reset input will either reset the LFO or stop it entirely if the switch is set. The LFO has two speed options and ranges from 3.5 minutes to 40ms. Good simple, versatile and looks fabulous.
