Superbooth 23: Jolin utilities, mixers and preamps
Jolin has four new modules to show at Superbooth. These include a 4-channel stereo mixer, a 7-channel active combiner, a multi-tool mixer and an input preamp.
Currently, we only have these rather flat-looking mock-ups of the front panels, which look a bit bewildering. Hopefully, actual photos will be forthcoming. Last year it released some modules where the PCB was also the front panel, so they had this naked look with exposed hardware. It looks like Join has gone for regular front panels this time.
Tutto & Sempre
Jolin is calling this, rather dramatically, an “endgame mixer”. What we have is four stereo channels with an active patchbay, individual VCAs, clickless mutes, and two headphone amps with switchable inserts.
So, on each channel, you have your stereo input, then a send-and-return-style patch insert for routing out through effects or some other process, and finally, a CV input for the VCA. The channel has a level control, a clickless mute switch and an individual output.
The large knob gives overall level control to two pairs of stereo outputs and there’s a post-mixer auxiliary input as well. The headphones can use the aux input as a preview before routing to the main mix.
It looks like it will be a field of patch cables, making getting to the knobs a bit of a challenge. It will be interesting to see how well that goes.
Singoli
It’s a combining transient detector. So it’s a mixer but not a mixer exactly? It can mix up to 7 audio or CV sources, and in fact, you can use it as an expansion to the Tutto & Sempre. So it is a mixer. But it also has the ability to detect a peak signal and output a gate. So you could control other gear with the level of what’s being passed through the Singoli.
Knobi
This is a complex voltage mangler. It can mix, attenuate, invert, display and multiply any kind of signal. So, again it’s a mixer of sorts but one that can also display the voltage level going through.
It has four channels of mixing, it can also provide an offset, attenuverting and a buffered mult. The button on the front is a manual trigger.
Ascolta
Ascolta is a dual preamp na envelope follower. It can handle stereo line signals and bring them up to Eurorack level. At the same time it will extract an envelope for use as modulation in your system.
Availability
It’s an interesting array of modules. The first three are slightly quizzical and could do with a bit of investigation and demonstration to fully understand what they’re offering. Preorders will open on the 11th May.
