Superbooth 23: Kaona Skippy polyphonic trigger sequencer
The Kaona Skippy offers circles of colourful patterns individually interacting through polyrhythmic algorithms all controlled via a single joystick.
Skippy
Skippy is a four-channel trigger sequencer with a glorious-looking circular display that animates your patterns. Using a thumb-joystick to navigate, you can generate patterns algorithmically or by putting them in yourself. Each colourful circle represents a channel, and the dots represent the triggers. In the middle, you get the current mode of operation displayed.
It looks amazing, although I’m wondering how smooth the workflow will be in practice.
I like the amount of randomisation, chaos and probability at play. You have control over the steps up to 64, BPM up to 400, the direction of flow, sequence delay and gate duration. Patterns can come from Euclidean, Matrix, micro timing and matrix rotation. And then you can all sort of interesting things to the patterns with concepts like acceleration, swing, gauss, jazz, spring and so on.
It is quite possibly the coolest-looking module I’ve seen in the lead-up to Superbhooth so far.
Kaona also o talks about an expander module for generative composition which will be along towards the end of the year. Skippy should be available soon for €372.
