WMD returns

We heard last August that WMD planned to close at the end of 2022. Citing the chip shortage and the rising production costs, the webshop was closed down, and we grieved the loss of a great company and a fantastic range of Eurorack modules. However, in a press release we received today, WMD announced that it’s back and has a plan.

New management has taken on WMD and will focus on producing Eurorack modules kicking off with a brand-new version of the Performance Mixer. It’s long been a firm favourite for performing modular artists. The Performance Mixer Mk2 will incorporate lots of user feedback, and I imagine it will be quite a thing. WMD will be revealing it any time now.

AMMT

A major part of the plan is to split into two companies, creating the new AMMT (pronounced “AMPED”). AMMT will focus on developing the Metron suite and digital drum line. The Metron is a complex and advanced trigger sequencer we first saw in 2019 after two years of development. It has spawned a range of innovative percussion modules like the Kraken. The first release from AMMT will be a digital Hi-Hat.

AMMT will be managed by WMD’s founder William Mathewson (as in “William Mathewson Devices” – who knew?), and three members of WMD’s previous design team.

“We’re stoked to finally announce this new chapter for WMD and AMMT,” says William Mathewson. “We sat down to start working on a new module concept that would become the hi-hat. The magic feeling of loving what I do was back as ideas flowed. That’s when I knew that there had to be a different way. A way of keeping things going, but under a new plan. The split gives ownership, financial interest, and responsibility to the team that was key in the development of our digital module ecosystem while allowing us to keep innovating together, which is the most exciting part for the four of us. Further, moving to contracted manufacturing has reduced my stress hugely, and I’m feeling the joy of designing creative and inspirational tools again.”

The paperwork should be all sorted out by the end of the year, and the new modules should be in production before then. This is all great news!

Update: WMD/AMMT will be at Superbooth, although they are not listed on the Superbooth Exhibitor page, so we don’t know in what booth as yet.
