Guitar Gear Gems this week looks at three new effects pedals including fuzz, distortion and tremolo. First up is the new Redbeard Effects Hairy Squid, them there is the new Empress Effects Heavy Menace and finally, the Catalinbread Tremolo8.
Hairy Squid
The Hairy Squid is the lated pedal from Redbeard Effects and is essentially three fuzz pedals in one. The heart of the pedal is the three modes which offer the following fuzz voices.

3 in 1
- Silicone Mode which is described as creamy, smoother vintage ‘muff’ sounds a la Gilmour
- LED Mode which offers massive modern headroom, loud & crazy sustain
- Germanium Mode this one they say is Edgier, with a ‘bender’-esque tone
Then the basic Volume, Tone and Gain controls dial in the relevant parameters, so guitarists have a neat simple user interface. It is a true bypass design and the pedal is 100% analogue throughout.
I can see this being popular with fans of their Honey Badger Octave Fuzz and anyone that likes to play with different styles of fuzz clipping circuits.

Heavy Menace
Empress Effects Heavy Menace is a distortion with a built-in gate. Aimed squarely at players that require a lot of gain, that foot switchable gate will come in very handy.

Three Modes
It offers three modes Light(ish), Heavy and Heavier, which gives a good starting point to build your distortion tones from.
Then there is a three-band EQ with a sweepable mid frequency. Plus, they have the Weight control to sculpt low frequency response of the effect.
Essentially, a more compact and feature laden version of their previous Heavy * distortion pedal.

Tremolo8
Catalinbread has announced the new Tremolo8, a pedal that combines tremolo, modulation and reverb in one unit. There are 8 programs available via a rotary switch.

8 Way Tremolo
These offer everything from a digitised Fender Showman’s “harmonic vibrato” type effect through to more varied LFO options.
The official list in full is Sine Wave, Sine Wave with Long Reverb, Square Wave, Sawtooth Wave, “Showman” Harmonic, Sine Wave with Chorus, Envelope and Ring Mod.
Then the Rate knob controls the speed of the tremolo, the Tone knob is a high-pass filter that is between the tremolo and the reverb and the Space knob adjusts the parallel reverb mix.
