It’s here! Plugin Alliance releases anticipated Black Box HG-2 Plugin
A renowned mixing tool now in plug-in form...
There was much interest around the announcement from Plugin Alliance and Black Box at NAMM 2017, but there was no demo available to try. Now the HG-2 plug-in has become fully available, with an introductory special offer. The HG-2 is a highly rated piece of mixing hardware, which is now emulated as a plug-in for the first time.
Plugin Alliance and Black Box Analog Design HG-2 Plug-in
The concept behind the Black Box Analog Design HG-2 originated with mix engineer Eric Racy. He wanted a unit for adding the unmistakeable tube sound to a mix buss in a controlled way. The HG-2 has since established itself as a desirable unit that aims to give mix engineers more control over how valves effect their mix, adding natural compression, saturation and harmonic enhancement.
Apparently, it was Dave Pensado who introduced Black Box to Plugin Alliance, where Brainworx were enlisted to model the HG-2. This in itself I find quite interesting, not just because Brainworx have a very modern approach with their plug-in emulations and delivery, but their strengths for me lie in their saturation tools. Although an emulation ought to be a direct copy, I’m sure there is an element of the Brainworx character. It feels like a good match and I’m keen to try the plug-in myself.
The HG-2 is unique in offering many flavours of tube saturation from a single unit. It uses a combination of transformers and tubes in different circuits to enhance the drive and ‘density’ added to a track. It also offers a unique method of adding these colours while retaining the same output level. It’s these electronics that change the relationship of gain throughout the device, which allow it to offer so many variants of tone – right through to overdrive distortion. Having this – in my view – unique toolset in plug-in form should prove to be attractive for many workflows today.
