Is Yellowtech’s Intellimix 2 the ultimate studio hub?

With touchscreen technology and digital mixers/controllers taking over our industry, this looks like a really cool piece of kit. It also has the latest in digital audio connectivity, with Dante AoIP technology, and appears to have a USB sound card connection. Could this be the ultimate new hub for your studio? The Intellimix 2 certainly presents some interesting new solutions.

I couldn’t quite believe my eyes when I came across this product. It’s been clear to me that the world of interfaces and mixers/DAW controllers need to combine in a new and interesting way. The closest solution we’ve had at combining these two product categories, that was actually successful, was the old Digidesign (Avid) 003 desktop mixer and Firewire interface. There’s also a real opportunity for manufacturers who are cutting down on expensive moving faders to develop a new style of control that gives more haptic feedback than a touchscreen.
Regular readers of Gearnews will also know that I’m championing AoIP technology, which has had much success in Live Sound, to be fully appreciated in the modern studio. Thanks to the first generation of the Intellimix ultimately being designed for the broadcast world, Yellowtec have taken note of audio-over-ethernet technology. The Intellimix 2 offers Dante connectivity and expansion capabilities, presumably for alternative protocols.
In fact, the complete list of audio connectivity for this small little mixer is really impressive. (See the link below for the tech specs.) Yellowtec think that the G-Touch fader is “the world’s most advanced fader”. The mixer also appears to offer a USB connection for a 16 x 16 interface which is great news. Obviously some might prefer to see Thunderbolt here, but that’s another debate. For me, it would be really interesting if the mixer could also be used as a DAW controller, but this isn’t yet clear from the little information available.
I’m certainly going to be keeping an eye on this interesting new product. If anyone has any more information available, perhaps you can share it bellow.

Yellowtec aren’t giving much away about this product, so there’s very little information available at the moment. There is a tech spec and some info about the new G-Touch fader control on their website, but it all feels a little mysterious. Too good to be true perhaps? There’s no pricing information yet either…
