With RADAR you can gather sounds, generate pulses and follow envelopes in this Mikrophonie-inspired 6HP Eurorack module.

Music Thing Modular probably did it first with the Mikrophonie by attaching a contact microphone to a Eurorack panel. Mutable Instruments Ears built on the idea by adding an Envelope and Gate output. On the back you’d also find jumpers to adjust the attack and release times and the gate sensitivity. Behringer has taken it on and brought the adjustments helpfully onto the front panel.

You can tap and scrape the piezo contact microphone to generate interesting and experimental noises. Or you can extract the envelope and gate to use in other things. The switches on the front give you three levels of gate sensitivity and three speeds of attack and decay. The gain knob can wind in up to 50dB of gain making it great for microphone, guitar or line level sources. Three LEDs give an indication of the input level, envelope decay and gate length.
RADAR is a tidy module with a distinctive look and all-round usefulness and is well priced at $79. Although, the Music Thing Mikrophonie is available for under $50, and clones of the Mutable Ears are around $79, so for once, Behringer hasn’t undercut the alternatives.
