Catalinbread Knight School Fuzz DIY pedal kit
Do you want o build your own fuzz pedal?
The Catalinbread Knight School Fuzz started off as an instructional device for a local pedal-building class taught by a local amp tech. Now, you can buy this DIY fuzz pedal and build it yourself.
Knight School Fuzz DIY Pedal
This Catalinbread Knight School Fuzz pedal can be purchased either as a kit, which you build yourself using a soldering iron and some solder.
Or you can buy it as a fully built pedal where you just plug in and go, without the hassle of solder fumes and potentially burning your fingers.
Boss Tone
The fuzz circuit is based on a Jordan Boss Tone fuzz and therefore expect a ripping, full, and throaty to sputtery and gnarly fuzz tone.
It’s a fuzz circuit that has been used by bands including The Black Keys through to ZZ Top, so it is a versatile fuzz tone with plenty of character.
Controls
The Catalinbread version has controls for Volume, Gain, and Bias. Volume and Gain are fairly self-explanatory.
The Bias control loads down the voltage from the supplied 9V all the way down to just under 5V and Catalinbread describes this as a “leaner”, “smoother” tone that many have compared to video game sounds. Maxing this control out pushes the circuit into a sweet, sputtery texture that evokes slight octave-down tones.
DIY
The DIY pedal build option is around $50 cheaper and the circuit doesn’t contain a huge amount of components.
Therefore, it could be a great way to teach yourself the basics of pedal building, as the hard work of tracing out the circuit has already been done for you.
The prices below include introductory pricing for the kit, just add $50 for a ready-made one.
MSRP – Kit Form $85 (normally $99.99) and Fully Built add $50
