The onslaught of affordable Behringer gear continues this time with Chaos. Based on Mutable Instruments’ open-source Marbles, the 16HP module is a random sampler. If you’re expecting a variety box of chocolates, you’re way off, sadly. No, this random sampler is an analogue modulation module that you can use as a source of random gates and clocked voltages, allowing you to create “intricate melodies as well as complex beats and soundscapes”, according to the company.

To a T (and X)
Behringer Chaos has two main sections: t and X. The t section generates gates tied to a master clock at random. The X section, on the other hand, puts out three random voltages clocked to the t section. “Each section is infinitely tweakable,” says Behringer, “and can be patched to different sources to create some truly unique sequences”.
The t section continues with three outputs, t1, t2 and t3, with a master clock generated out of t2. Turning the Jitter knob warps the master clock and simulates a musician’s small imperfections when playing to a click.
More Functions
The module also sports a memory function that recalls the order of each preceding clock variation, voltage, or rhythm.
There are two separate outs, one for the main signal and another for a dynamic variant.
